Work Will Add New Lanes on Southbound I-270 at the I-495 Outer Loop Merge

(September 19, 2017) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is starting initial work on its $100 million innovative congestion relief project on I-270 announced by Governor Larry Hogan in April to provide some quick improvements for motorists. MDOT SHA will resurface and restripe the southbound I-270 west spur which connects the main line of I-270 with the outer loop of I-495 (Capital Beltway). This work will eliminate the existing left lane drop where I-270 meets I-495.

“This is the first step in a major project to break daily gridlock and give the hundreds of thousands of motorists the Power of Go,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Pete K. Rahn.

Crews are permitted to work and close lanes on the outer loop of I-495 and southbound I-270 during the following times:

Outer loop of I-495 (westbound), Sunday through Thursday nights:

• Single lane closures starting at 9 p.m.

• Double or triple lane closures starting at 11 p.m.

• All lanes open to traffic by 5 a.m.

 

Southbound I-270:

• Single lane closures during the day (10 a.m. to 8 p.m.)

• Double lane closures starting at 8 p.m.

• All lanes open to traffic by 5 a.m.

Single lane closures are also scheduled on southbound I-270 on Saturday and Sunday mornings between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. Additional lane closures and work hours may be needed to expedite the work and keep the project on schedule. For more information about this project, click here.

Once complete late fall, this phase of work will extend three lanes from southbound I-270 to the outer loop of I-495. The work also includes modifications to signage along I-495 and I-270 consistent with the new lane configuration.
