SHA Opens Bridge Ahead of Schedule

(August 17, 2016) – After a 10-week construction closure, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will reopen the MD 546 (Finzel Road) Bridge over I-68 in Garrett County Saturday or Sunday, depending on weather.  Crews repaired the bridge to improve the ride, enhance safety, and prolong the “life” of the structure.

“This Finzel Road Bridge deck replacement project was a tremendous success and was completed ahead of schedule,” said SHA District 6 Engineer Anthony Crawford.  “We appreciate drivers’ and residents’ patience and partnership during the closure.”  “Closing the bridge and expediting the work is not only beneficial in terms of cutting the project work time nearly in half, it also significantly reduced overall project costs.”

Crews were able to work extended hours to replace the deteriorated concrete bridge deck (riding surface), side walls and supports, as well as clean and paint the steel.  SHA resurfaced the roadway approaches to provide a smooth transition onto the new bridge lanes.
