(March 21, 2014) – Motorists should be prepared for left lane closures on eastbound and westbound Interstate 68 in Cumberland next week. The lane closures will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 25 and continue 24 hours a day through Thursday, April 10.

Motorists should be prepared for possible delays during peak travel times and use extra caution in the work zone. The closures are necessary to allow crews to replace two joints on the I-68 bridge over CSX between exits 43A (Johnson Street/Beall Street) and 43B (MD 51 – Industrial Boulevard).  Traffic lanes will be shifted to the outer edges of the bridge while crews demolish the existing joints and install new ones.

The work is part of a $14 million, two-year bridge rehabilitation project in Allegany County. SHA’s contractor for the project is Titan Industrial Services Inc. of Baltimore. More information about the project is available at www.bitly.com/crosstownbridge.

While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone!
