February 13, 2014 – Just in time for today’s winter storm, the Maryland State Highway Administration announces new upgrades to its 511 travel information service, helping Maryland drivers to Know “Even More” Before They Go. For drivers who rely most on the State’s roadways, Maryland 511 now features a “Commercial Vehicle Operator” section designed for professional drivers. Truckers can now customize 511 accounts specifically for commercial trips that can include multiple stops along a delivery route.  The enhanced 511 system provides a one-stop shop with information about route restrictions, Truck Weigh and Inspection Stations and winter storm emergency truck parking.

If you’re a professional driver with a special hauling permit or you live along a designated snow emergency route, you’re probably acutely interested in winter storm operations and when county snow emergency plans go into effect. You can now program 511 to send text messages directly to your mobile device or e-mail as counties enter or exit a snow emergency plan.  A vigilant citizen who wants to know about the latest Amber Alert can learn about those too using the improved 511 system.

“Whether you’re commuting to an office or you make the road your office as a professional truck driver, Maryland 511 is a tremendous resource – especially during winter weather,” said Administrator Melinda B. Peters.  “A dependable roadway network is critical for keeping Maryland’s economy moving – and 511 is a tool that helps professional drivers and commuters alike avoid costly delays.”

“Real-time information is fundamental to truck drivers delivering freight on our roadways.  By providing critical notifications about weather conditions, route restrictions, emergency parking availability and traffic incidents, Maryland’s enhanced 511 system will be a major asset to truck drivers trying to deliver goods safely and efficiently,” said Maryland Motor Truck Association President Louis Campion.
Here is how it works:  Register at www.md511.org  and select “Commercial Vehicle.”  From there, you can input delivery route information and select specific roads, days and times.  Once completed, you are able to automatically receive incident and travel time information to your e-mail or mobile device for free! (Regular service provider costs will apply.)  Another option allows you to register your phone number, so that you will be recognized by the system and bypass the introductory menu prompts.

You can also reach Maryland 511 by calling 1-855-GOMD511 or 1-855-466-3511.

The three-digit 511 number was designated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) as the national telephone number for traveler information.  “511” is used by nearly 50 state or municipal transportation departments and transit agencies in the nation.   Log on to www.MD511.org and set up your personalized routes today and learn how 511 can improve your delivery route, commute or next road trip.

Please remember – use 511 safely – Maryland law prohibits hand-held mobile phone use and texting while driving.  Thank you for driving safely!
