PEDESTRIANS WILL BE ABLE TO CROSS MD 4 MORE SAFELY IN PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY

WHAT:
               
The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will activate a new mid-block crossing signal for pedestrians along MD 4 between Donnell Drive and Walters Lane in Forestville.  

The mid-block crossing includes a new pedestrian-activated signal midway between Donnell Drive and Walters Lane, advanced warning lights and improved signage alerting motorists and pedestrians of the new signal and marked crosswalk.

New “Watch for Peds” and “Ped X-ing” signs with flashing warning lights will also alert drivers to the new mid-block pedestrian crossing.

McDonalds parking lot at the corner of MD 4 and Walters Lane (just west of I-495) in Forestville.  From I-95, take exit 11 (MD 4) and go north or west.  Travel one mile and turn left at Walters Lane.  Make a left into the McDonalds parking lot.

WHY:

To improve safety along MD 4.  From 2008 to 2012, there were 12 pedestrian crashes between Donnell Drive and Walters Lane.  On average each year in Maryland, 100 pedestrians are killed.  SHA is committed to partnering in the three “E’s” of safety – education, enforcement and engineering – to enhance pedestrian safety and access.
