(April 24, 2013) – Starting Sunday night, April 28, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin the final phase of a $1.1 million safety and resurfacing project on a one-mile section of MD 410 (East West Highway) between MD 650 (New Hampshire Avenue) and MD 212 (Riggs Road). Weather permitting, the project should be complete late June.

Beginning next week, SHA will remove top layer of pavement, patch and resurface all lanes, and re-stripe the roadway with new lane markings.  The project is replacing deteriorated pavement on the heavily traveled MD 410 corridor between Takoma Park and Hyattsville. On average, 33,000 vehicles travel East West Highway each day.

During construction, crews may close one lane in both directions of MD 410 from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m., Sundays through Thursdays.  As each section is paved, SHA will restrict parking along MD 410. Motorists should allow extra time to locate alternate parking since vehicles may be towed if parked illegally in the work area.

The project began last summer and crews have completed the sidewalk, curb and gutter, driveway and concrete bus pad work.

Residents and travelers are advised that equipment used for construction can be loud and disruptive. SHA asks for your patience as crews work to complete the project. SHA’s contractor for the work is Ardent Company, LLC of McLean, Va. As crews work to keep work zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone!
