I-83 Closure Schedule April 2, 3 and 4:
8 p.m. – 5 a.m.: Close left lane of southbound I-83
9 p.m. – 5 a.m.: Close left lane of northbound I-83
12 a.m. – 5 a.m.: Close all lanes of traffic on southbound and northbound I-83 (15- minute periods each night)
During the closures, SHA and Maryland State Police will stop all traffic on I-83 for up to 15 minutes to allow large cranes to move safely within the work zone and for crews to secure steel bridge beams. Crews will open all lanes of traffic on I-83 no later than 5 a.m. each day. In case of inclement weather next Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, the overnight closures on I-83 will resume Sunday night, April 8.
More than 49,700 vehicles use this section of I-83 daily. Motorists traveling late at night are encouraged to avoid the area, or plan for extra travel time. Motorists should consider MD 45 (York Road) as an alternate route though no formal detour will be posted due to the temporary nature of the closures.
The late-night road closures are part of a $5.4 million construction project to replace the Middletown Road Bridge over I-83. SHA’s contractor for the work is The Six-M Company of Delta, PA.
SHA will use electronic message boards, construction barrels and cones and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone. As crews work to keep work zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone!
