Motorists Can Expect Daytime and Nighttime Single Lane Closures
(June 18, 2018) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is beginning two major safety and resurfacing projects in Prince George’s County.
Later this week, MDOT SHA will begin a $2.9 million project to improve US 301 between Peerless Avenue and the truck scales in Upper Marlboro. The 1.5-mile project also includes milling, paving, restriping and drainage improvements on US 301, as well as new sidewalk along the northside of US 301 between Village Drive West and Old Crain Highway that will connect existing sidewalk.
Crews will also upgrade the traffic signal at US 301 at Village Drive West to include pedestrian crossing signals. MDOT SHA will add a crosswalk consistent with the new pedestrian traffic signals and sidewalk.
Motorists can expect single-lane closures on US 301 Mondays through Fridays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. MDOT SHA’s contractor, Reliable Contracting Co. of Gambrills, will guide traffic through the work zone using barrels and arrow boards. Nearly 46,000 vehicles use this section of Crain Highway each day, so motorists should expect delays during work hours. The project will be complete summer 2019.
Fresh on the heels of a resurfacing project on US 1 between MD 200 (ICC) and Oak Street, MDOT SHA is beginning another project to resurface 1.4 miles of US 1 between Oak Street and the Howard County line in Laurel. The project will begin mid-July.
The $3.2 million project includes upgrading sidewalk ramps and driveway entrances to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, repairing or replacing storm drain inlets and cleaning drainage pipes and milling, paving and restriping US 1. Crews will also construct concrete bus pads to protect the pavement from heavier vehicles, such as buses.
Motorists can expect single-lane closures between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday nights through Friday mornings. MDOT SHA’s contractor, Congressional Contracting, Inc. of Potomac., will use barrels, cones and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone. Approximately 38,700 vehicles use this section of US 1 each day. The project will be complete late-summer 2019.
By June 30, the end of the State’s 2018 fiscal year, MDOT SHA will have resurfaced or treated half of all state highway lane miles since 2015. This milestone marks the improvement of nearly 8,500 lane miles, calculated by miles of highway multiplied by the number of lanes, improving safety and enhancing the customer experience for millions of drivers across the state.
While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely.
