Project Brings Safety, Road Improvements to Capital Beltway
(April 15, 2024) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is beginning an $11 million safety and resurfacing project this month on I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) between Livingston Road and south of Auth Road in Prince George’s County. The project includes resurfacing improvements to all ramps at the MD 414 (St. Barnabas Road) and MD 5 (Branch Avenue) interchanges. Weather permitting, the project will be complete in 2025.
The project covers approximately nine miles of the Capital Beltway. In addition to resurfacing, the project includes:
- cleaning and repair of existing drainage pipes and structures;
- upgrading traffic barriers and barrier end treatments;
- performing erosion and sediment control measures and
- upgrading signage and pavement markings.
During construction, single-lane closures will be in effect weekdays during off-peak hours. Multiple lane closures will be in effect overnight, Sundays through Thursdays, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following day. Work times may be adjusted pending the project schedule.
The Capital Beltway handles approximately 188,000 vehicle trips every day and serves as a vital connection to Washington, D.C. and Virginia. Contractor Holcim-MAR Inc., of Greenbelt, will perform the work. More information on the project is available here.
