(February 24, 2012) – The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and its private industry partners earlier this month announced 13 Maryland Quality Initiative (MdQI) Awards of Excellence winners for State transportation projects in 2011.

MdQI, a consortium of state transportation agencies and private industry associations, annually recognizes excellence in developing and constructing transportation projects for the State of Maryland and county governments.  Design consultants and construction contractors participating in MdQI commit to exceed minimum performance standards and provide high-quality products and services.

MdQI representatives and private industry leaders were on-hand to recognize 13 award winners in 12 categories, which included state, county and private sector project teams and firms as part of the 19th annual MdQI Conference in downtown Baltimore.  The MdQI consortium members have a shared vision to deliver cost-effective, environmentally sensitive projects to enhance safety and mobility for Marylanders.  “Quality Transportation – A Hybrid Approach” was the theme of this year’s conference, which emphasized safety, infrastructure preservation, and new technologies.

A panel of experts representing both public and private sectors of the transportation industry evaluated the 2011 Award of Excellence nominations.  Criteria included: design, specification compliance, traffic maintenance, cooperation, contract administration, materials compliance, production equipment, erosion and sediment control, adherence to schedules, subcontracting and overall project quality.

MdQI affiliates include: American Concrete Paving Association-Northeast Chapter; County Engineers Association of Maryland; Federal Highway Administration – DelMar Division (Delaware-Maryland); Maryland Asphalt Association; Maryland Aviation Administration; Maryland Ready Mix Concrete Association; Maryland Transit Administration; Maryland Transportation Authority; Maryland Transportation Builders and Materials Association; and State Highway Administration.
