(April 22, 2011) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is beginning a project to improve safety and operations at the Towson Roundabout in Baltimore County.

 

The $632,000 project will begin on Tuesday, April 26 and continue through late summer. Crews will work in the roundabout area Sunday throughThursday nights, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. the next morning. The six-phase project includes five phases corresponding to the five “legs” of the roundabout: East Joppa Road, Dulaney Valley Road, York Road north of the roundabout, Allegheny Avenue/West Joppa Road west of the roundabout and York Road south of the roundabout.

 

The final phase will include the installation of new pavement markings within the roundabout. No work is scheduled on weekends between 5 a.m. Friday and 9 p.m. Sunday.

 

“In partnership with Baltimore County, SHA is working to enhance safety and pedestrian access to the roundabout,” said SHA District 4 Engineer David Peake. “While work is underway, we ask that motorists remain alert for traffic changes in the roundabout and plan ahead for extra travel time at night in downtown Towson.”

 

Crews will begin work on the right lane of westbound East Joppa Road approaching the roundabout. As work progresses, crews may shift traffic and close and detour various “legs” of the roundabout on weeknights for a few weeks at a time.

 

SHA encourages through travelers to use the Towson Bypass (Bosley Avenue/West Burke Avenue) as an alternate route. SHA’s contractor is Machado Construction Company, Inc. of Baltimore. The project will be complete late summer 2011, weather permitting.

 

Construction season is here with numerous active work zone sites that include major construction projects taking months to complete and mobile operations taking only minutes. While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert - look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone.
