(August 6, 2010) – Yesterday, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) reopened Hollow Road following a temporary three week closure to make routine repairs to the westbound I-70 bridge over the roadway located near Middletown, Frederick County.   As part of the $310,000 project, SHA completed routine repairs to a steel beam beneath the bridge.

The bridge, built in 1968 was structurally sound; however routine repairs to the steel beams that support the bridge were necessary.

As the steel beam is located directly over both travel lanes of Hollow Road, a temporary closure of the road was necessary to ensure the safety of workers and motorists during construction.  The temporary closure also allowed crews to complete the project in the shortest possible time.

SHA awarded the contract to Covington Machine and Welding, Inc. of Annapolis.  SHA encourages motorists to stay alert in work zones and slow down.  Citizens who have questions about traffic operations along I-70 or other State numbered routes in Frederick County may call SHA’s District 7 Office at 301-624-8100 or toll free at 1-800-635-5119.

Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pick ups.  Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com.
