(August 6, 2010) -   Next week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a $402,000 roadway patching project along nine miles of US 50 (John Hanson Highway) between the Anne Arundel County line and I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) in Prince George’s County.  Weather permitting, construction will be complete by Labor Day.

SHA will close one to two lanes overnight; motorists should prepare for delays on US 50. To provide ample room for work crews, high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane restrictions will be lifted during work hours only.

• Westbound US 50: single lane closures overnight Monday through Friday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., with double lane closures between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

• Eastbound US 50: single lane closures Sunday through Thursday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., with double lane closures between, 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Continuous double lane closures will be in place the weekends of August 13, August 20, and August 27:

• Westbound US 50:
o Friday, August 13 beginning at 9 p.m. through 10 a.m. Sunday, August 15
o Friday, August 20 beginning at 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. Saturday, August 21
o Friday, August 27 beginning at 10 a.m.  through 10 a.m. Sunday, August 29

• Eastbound US 50:
o Saturday, August 14 beginning at noon through 5 a.m. Monday, August 16
o Sunday, August 22 beginning at 2 a.m. through 10 a.m. Monday, August 23
o Saturday, August 28 beginning at noon through 5 a.m. Monday, August 30

This section of US 50 carries an average of 210,000 vehicles per day.  With the heavy volume of traffic, the pavement is showing signs of wear in the form of rutting and cracking.
SHA will use flaggers, variable message signs, jersey barrier wall, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.  SHA awarded the contract to Concrete General, Inc.
