Traffic to be Detoured Beginning June 17th; Motorists to Be Detoured For Up to Three Months

(June 12, 2008) – On Tuesday, June 17th weather permitting, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will temporarily close the MD 28 (Tuscarora Road) bridge over Washington Run in Point of Rocks. The $2 million project will replace the MD 28 bridge near the Point of Rocks Industrial Park in Frederick County.

The bridge, built in 1932, will close Tuesday, June 17 and reopen in early September weather permitting. Signs will be in place in advance of the bridge in both directions to alert motorists of the closure and detour route. The detour is approximately seven and one-half miles and requires the closure of MD 28 between Rock Hall Road and Pleasant View Road. More than 6,000 vehicles travel along this section of MD 28 each day.

Motorists traveling along MD 28 east of the bridge are detoured to northbound US 15 (James Monroe Highway) to southbound Mountville Road to eastbound New Design Road back to MD 28. Motorists traveling along MD 28 west of the bridge are detoured to westbound New Design Road to northbound Mountville Road to southbound US 15 back to MD 28.

SHA awarded the contract to Concrete General of Gaithersburg. This project is partially funded by an $800,000 grant from the Federal Highway Administration’s Highways for Life Program. SHA encourages motorists to stay alert in work zones and slow down. Citizens who have questions about traffic operations along MD 28, or other State numbered routes in Frederick County, may call SHA’s District 7 Office at 301-624-8100 or toll free at 1-800-635-5119.

During the next several months, there could be more than 350 work zones. Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pick ups.
