STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION TO REPLACE MD 180 BRIDGE OVER TRIBUTARY OF THE POTOMAC RIVER IN FREDERICK COUNTY

Traffic to be Detoured Beginning June 18th; Motorists Should Expect Delays and Plan Alternate Routes          
          
(June 12, 2008) – Next week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will temporarily close the MD 180 (Jefferson Pike) bridge east of MD 478 (Knoxville Road) in Knoxville, Frederick County. The $2 million project to replace the bridge should be completed in mid-late fall. is scheduled for replacement this summer and will reopen this fall, weather permitting.          
          
The bridge, built in 1910, will close Wednesday, June 18. Temporary traffic signs will be in place in advance of the bridge in both directions to alert motorists of the closure and detour route. More than 1,200 vehicles travel along this section of MD 180 each day. The roadway will be closed between MD 478 and MD 17. The detour route is approximately four and one-half miles and has an estimated travel time of fifteen minutes.           
          
Westbound motorists are detoured from MD 180 to northbound MD 17 (Burkittsville Road) to westbound US 340 (Jefferson National Pike) to southbound MD 67 (Rohrersville Road) to eastbound US 340 back to MD 180. Eastbound motorists are detoured from MD 180 to westbound US 340 to southbound MD 67 to eastbound US 340 to southbound MD 17 back to MD 180.          
          
SHA awarded the contract to R. F. Kline of Frederick. SHA encourages motorists to stay alert in work zones and slow down.
