(May 10, 2012) – This week the State Highway Administration begins work on the bridge deck replacement and painting of the steel substructure of the MD 313 (Federalsburg Highway) bridge over Marshyhope Creek in Federalsburg.  The bridge project should be completed in summer 2013.

Motorists will cross the two-lane Marshyhope Creek Bridge by alternating single lane access through temporary traffic signals positioned at each end of the bridge. The temporary signals will be installed before the deck replacement work begins. Single lane access over the bridge is scheduled to begin in mid-May. SHA will not redirect traffic during the project.  The bridge will remain accessible to all motor vehicle traffic until the deck replacement is completed.  Local businesses and truckers will not be measurably impacted by the bridge work as the roadway will remain open to traffic at all times.

The $2.5 million contract was awarded to JJID, Inc. of Bear, Delaware.  The bridge was constructed in 1960 and the new deck replacement should have a useful life of up to 40 years.  In addition to the substructure painting and new concrete deck over the 270-foot span, the bridge improvements also include new ramps, curb and gutter, sidewalk and pavement markings.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely.  Safer driving. Safer work zones. For everyone.
