(October 19, 2020) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) today begins long-term repairs on the outer loop of I-495 (Capital Beltway) bridge over Northwest Branch between MD 650 (New Hampshire Avenue/exit 28) and MD 193 (University Boulevard/exit 29) in Montgomery County.

Work will result in intermittent closures of one, two and three lanes as required during off-peak hours. The project should be complete by the end of the year, weather permitting. Temporary repairs resulted in intermittent lane closures throughout the summer.

Crews are permitted to close multiple lanes in the work zone on the outer loop of I-495 until all work is complete on the following days and times:

  • Nightly Monday through Thursday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and;
  • Weekends from 9 p.m. on Friday through 5 a.m. on Monday morning.

Roadway signage will alert drivers to changing traffic patterns in the work zone. Drivers should expect delays, add extra commute time and use alternate routes during repairs. Additional work times and lane closures may be necessary to complete this work. Equipment used for construction may be disruptive.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers.  Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and, look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes.

Drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones. For a list of all major MDOT SHA projects, go to our Project Portal.  For a look at real-time traffic conditions, go to www.md511.maryland.gov.
