(February 11, 2011) – Nearly 35,000 motorists who travel along US 40 (Dual Highway) near Eastern Boulevard should soon notice smoother travels.  Recently, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) completed installation of a new $27,000 video detection system for the traffic signal at the US 40 / Eastern Boulevard intersection in Hagerstown, Washington County.

Based on concerns expressed by drivers who use the intersection, SHA evaluated operations along US 40.  Engineers determined that drivers were not pulling up to the stop bar and activating the detector embedded in the roadway.  To assist with intersection operations, crews mounted new video cameras to detect when drivers need to travel through.  This work was completed in January.

“SHA listened the concerns of the motoring public regarding the traffic operations at the intersection,” said SHA District 6 Engineer Anthony Crawford.  “Engineers will continue to monitor operations at the US 40 / Eastern Boulevard intersection and SHA thanks motorists for their patience.”

SHA’s contractor - Rommel Engineering of Odenton - installed the new video detection system.  Those who have questions about traffic operations along US 40 or other State numbered routes in Washington County may call SHA’s District 6 Office at 301-729-8400 or toll free at 1-800-760-7138.
