(May 11, 2009) – On May 17, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a project to resurface approximately one mile of US 40 Alternate (Main Street) through Grantsville, Garrett County.  SHA anticipates completing the $196,000 project in early June, weather permitting.

Motorists on US 40 Alternate should expect single-lane closures Monday through Friday between sunrise and sunset.  Flaggers, variable message signs, barrels, and temporary signs will guide motorists through the work zone.  Approximately 3,000 vehicles travel along this section of US 40 Alternate each day; motorists should expect delays.

SHA will temporarily close some of the intersections along this route during the resurfacing.  The closures are necessary to prevent motorists from crossing the hot asphalt before it has cooled and hardened.  Motorists north of US 40 Alternate will be detoured to eastbound or westbound Ravine Street and Miller Avenue back to US 40 Alternate.   Motorists to the south will be detoured to eastbound or westbound Grant Street back to US 40 Alternate.

To facilitate the resurfacing and to complete the project as quickly as possible, on street parking will not be permitted during construction.  Vehicles parked on US 40 Alternate between sunrise and sunset will be towed.  Information on towed vehicles will be available at the Maryland State Police McHenry Barrack by calling 301-895-1101.   Motorists are advised to seek parking on side streets or parking lots with owner’s permission.

This project is made possible through Governor Martin O’Malley’s aggressive management of the requirements of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, bringing critically needed transportation investments to Maryland.  Projects such as these are stimulating Maryland’s economy by supporting hundreds of jobs.  Follow the delivery of these projects at www.recovery.maryland.gov, which tracks every category of ARRA spending and provides contract-level details to the public in an effort to achieve new levels of government transparency and efficiency.

SHA awarded the contract to Keystone Lime Co.  Those who have questions about traffic operations on US 40 Alternate, or other State numbered routes in Garrett County may call SHA’s District 6 Office at 301-729-8400 or toll free at 1-800-760-7138.
