​New Sidewalk Installation is One of Two Pedestrian Safety Projects on US 1 

(October 30, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration recently completed a $2.2 million project to improve pedestrian safety and mobility on southbound US 1 (Washington Boulevard) between Cedar Avenue and Crestmount Road in Jessup. The project installed a new 900-foot section of sidewalk along the busy, heavily traveled commercial area of US 1 in Howard County. 

The project began fall 2022 and includes a new sidewalk, curb, gutter and drainage improvements, as well as work on a 360-foot long retaining wall with partial reconstruction of the existing bridge over Dorsey Run. A.J. Romano Construction Inc., of Laurel, was the primary contractor on the project.

“This sidewalk project is just one of the many statewide examples showing how SHA is working every day to make our transportation system safer and more accessible for our vulnerable users,” said State Highway Administrator William Pines.  

“As we improve our infrastructure across Maryland, we’re committed to make our highways, sidewalks and transit facilities more accessible and interconnected,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld. “These types of projects enhance mobility options for all users, and improve the quality of life for residents.” 

The State Highway Administration also is performing other pedestrian safety improvements as part of a separate $4.7 million project that stretches about nine miles between North Laurel and Elkridge. Work on that project will be completed in summer 2024 and result in new sidewalks, crosswalks and upgraded pedestrian signals at Guilford Road, Brewers Court, Rowanberry Drive and Doctor Patel Drive.
