Motorists Can Expect a 72 Hour Flagging Operation to Begin on August 8
(August 3, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin a bridge cleaning and painting project on the MD 34 (Shepherdstown Pike) bridge over Antietam Creek in Sharpsburg starting August 8. This bridge is located within the boundaries of Antietam National Battlefield. The project should be complete by August 11, weather permitting.
Beginning at 6 a.m. on August 8, crews will close a single lane and alternate traffic with a flagging operation for three days working 24 hours a day. Motorists can expect lane closures throughout this time. If additional time is needed to complete the painting, motorists can expect intermittent shoulder closures and a daytime flagging operation in place from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Reglas Painting, Co. of Baltimore will be performing the work. Crews will be using signs, construction barrels and cones to guide motorists through the work zone.
The State Highway Administration understands lane closures can be an inconvenience, but the work is necessary to ensure a safe and reliable transportation system. Motorists are asked to reduce speeds approaching and while in active work zones.
