Daytime Work Covers US 1 and Guilford Road Intersection
(November 9, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin a project tomorrow Thursday, November 10, to improve the driving surface on both directions of US 1 (Washington Boulevard) at the Guilford Road intersection in Jessup.
Beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, crews will close the right lane and shoulder to resurface the roadway. When finished with that side, they will switch to the left lane. The work is expected to be complete by 3 p.m. the same day, weather permitting. MDOT SHA contractor MIM Construction, of Mt. Airy, will use electronic signs, barrels, and cones to guide motorists through the work zone.
The work on US 1 at Guilford Road is part of a pedestrian safety improvement project. Improvements are scheduled at the following locations on US 1 and include:
- Brewers Court – Installation of a new pedestrian-activated countdown crossing signal, a protected pedestrian refuge space in the median and new continental crosswalks with high visibility markings.
- Guilford Road – Construction of a shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists along southbound US 1 between Guilford Road and the existing sidewalk (about 1,100 feet to the north), new high visibility continental crosswalks and upgraded pedestrian crossing signals.
- Rowanberry Drive – Construction of new concrete sidewalk along northbound US 1 between South Hanover Road and Old Washington Road, new high visibility continental crosswalks and upgraded pedestrian crossing signals.
- Doctor Patel Drive – Installation of a new pedestrian-activated countdown crossing signal, a protected pedestrian refuge space in the median and new high visibility continental crosswalks.
Remaining work at the US 1 and Guilford Road intersection includes new pedestrian signal poles and a stormwater management facility. Brewers Court will be the next intersection to see work. Learn more about this project by clicking here.
Maryland’s Move Over Law requires motorists to make a lane change or slow down when approaching any stopped, standing or parked vehicle displaying hazard warning lights, road flares or other caution signals. The expanded law is in place to protect emergency responders and motorists who encounter a roadside emergency.
