​MDOT SHA Contractors to Mill and Pave US 1 in Bridge Replacement Project Area 

(November 7, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will institute overnight closures and detours of the US 1 (Washington Boulevard) bridge over CSX Transportation railroad lines in the Halethorpe area of Baltimore County beginning 9 p.m. Sunday, November 13. The bridge closures and detours will take place overnight only, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday night, November 13, through Friday morning, November 18, to allow crews to mill asphalt pavement in the bridge work zone. 

The following week, overnight bridge closures and detours will take place 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. between Sunday, November 20, and Wednesday morning, November 23, to allow crews to place new asphalt pavement in the bridge work zone. In case of inclement weather, the bridge closure and detours will resume after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend on Monday night, November 28.

During the closures, motorists on US 1 will be directed to the following detour routes (see map below):

  • Northbound US 1: Take westbound I-195 to northbound I-95; go past I-695 to the ramp to southbound Caton Avenue; continue to Caton Avenue and turn right onto US 1 Alternate (Washington Boulevard).
  • Southbound US 1: Turn right onto Selma Avenue; continue left onto Francis Avenue; then turn right onto Selford Road. Continue to South Rolling Road; turn right on to the ramp to I-195 East (Metropolitan Boulevard); take eastbound I-195; go past I-95 and continue to the ramp to US 1 (Washington Boulevard).
  • Clarke Boulevard to US 1 Alternate: Take Clarke Boulevard onto Selford Road; turn right onto Francis Avenue; take the Francis Avenue Bridge over Amtrak/MARC rail lines to Ridge Avenue; continue on Ridge Avenue to US 1. 
  • US 1 (Southwestern Boulevard) to Clarke Boulevard: From US 1 turn onto Tom Day Boulevard; turn left onto Carville Avenue; turn right onto Francis Avenue; turn left onto Selford Avenue and proceed to Clarke Boulevard.

The intersection of the south end of Clarke Boulevard at US 1 remains closed 24/7 until early 2023 for reconstruction of the intersection as part of the bridge replacement project. 

The milling and paving work is part of the $36.9 million project to replace the bridge over the CSXT lines, which is scheduled for completion summer 2023. MDOT SHA contractor Lane Construction, of Glen Burnie, is performing the work. Additional information on the project can be found here

The Move Over Law in Maryland requires motorists to make a lane change or slow down when approaching any stopped, standing or parked vehicle displaying hazard warning lights, road flares or other caution signals. The expanded law is in place to protect emergency responders and motorists who encounter a roadside emergency.​
