(October 27, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will start a new phase of the $4.8 million MD 75 (Green Valley Road) over I-70 bridge deck replacement project in New Market, Frederick County on Friday, October 28. This phase of the project should be complete through mid-December.
Starting just before midnight tomorrow night, crews will close one lane of I-70 as they begin removing the two interior travel lanes and raised median in the middle of the MD 75 bridge. Crews will also be working in the I-70 median to install a concrete barrier wall around the MD 75 bridge pier. The lane closure will be in place until 11 a.m. Saturday.
Work is permitted daytime and overnight hours, including weekends. The schedule is weekdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and overnight work hours are 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. The only exception is Saturday. Crews will work the next three Saturdays – October 29, November 5, and November 12 - from midnight until 11 a.m.
During construction, there may be brief traffic stoppages on I-70 as crews safely remove portions of the bridge deck located above I-70 travel lanes. MDOT SHA has a demolition shield installed under the MD 75 bridge to collect any debris. Once demolition is complete, crews will start construction of a new bridge deck.
MDOT SHA advises motorists that the demolition shield currently in place lowers the height clearance from 17-feet to 14-feet, six inches for vehicles traveling on eastbound and westbound I-70 under the MD 75 bridge. Vehicles exceeding that height restriction can use the MD 75 exit, and then use the on-ramp from MD 75 back onto I-70.
Two-way traffic will be maintained on the MD 75 bridge throughout construction. MDOT SHA will provide one travel lane in each direction during all stages of construction.
MDOT SHA’s contractor, Greenbridge Construction, Inc. based in Westminster, will use electronic signs, roadway signs, cones, and barrels to alert motorists about lane closures and any traffic stoppages on I-70.
Maryland’s Move Over Law requires motorists to make a lane change or slow down when approaching any stopped, standing, or parked vehicle displaying hazard warning lights, road flares or other caution signals. The expanded law is in place to protect emergency responders and motorists who encounter a roadside emergency.
