Weeknight Bridge Closures and Detours Scheduled Overnights from Wednesday, July 6 through Monday, July 18

(June 30, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is continuing a $36.9 million project to replace the bridge carrying US 1 (Washington Boulevard) over CSX Transportation (CSXT) rail lines in the Halethorpe area of Baltimore County, and will close the bridge and detour traffic at night beginning next Wednesday, weather permitting, to set girders supporting the second half of the new bridge.

From Wednesday evening, July 6, through the morning of Monday, July 18, the bridge will be closed and detoured overnights only, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next day, Sundays through Thursdays. In case of inclement weather, the bridge closures and detours will take place on the next possible weeknight.

While work is taking place, motorists will be directed to the following detour routes:

  • From northbound US 1: take westbound I-195 to northbound I-95: go past I-695 to the ramp to southbound Caton Avenue, continue to Caton Avenue and turn right onto US 1 Alt. (Washington Boulevard).
  • From southbound US 1: turn right onto Selma Avenue, continue left onto Francis Avenue, turn right onto Selford Road. Continue to South Rolling Road, turn right on to the ramp to I-195 East (Metropolitan Boulevard), take eastbound I-195, go past I-95 and continue to the ramp to US 1 (Washington Blvd.)
  • Clarke Boulevard to US 1 Alt.: take Clarke Boulevard onto Selford Road, turn right onto Francis Avenue, take the Francis Avenue bridge over Amtrak/MARC rail lines to Ridge Avenue, continue on Ridge Avenue to US 1.
  • US 1 (Southwestern Boulevard) to Clarke Boulevard: from US 1 turn onto Tom Day Boulevard, turn left onto Carville Avenue, turn right onto Francis Avenue, turn left onto Selford Avenue and proceed to Clarke Boulevard.

NOTE: The intersection of the south end of Clarke Boulevard at US 1 will remain closed 24 hours a day until early 2023 for reconstruction of the intersection as part of the bridge replacement project.

After the bridge girders are set in place, there will be temporary single-lane closures on US 1 in the vicinity of the bridge, when necessary, on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The bridge will remain open to traffic during lane closures, with flag persons controlling two-way traffic.

The project is expected to be complete by summer 2023, weather permitting. MDOT SHA’s contractor, Lane Construction of Glen Burnie, is performing the work.
