Motorists Can Expect Mostly Nighttime Work

(July 26, 2018) – Today, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin a project to improve the ride quality on I-70 westbound from MD 75 to Monocacy River Bridge in Frederick County. The $5-million project will be complete by late fall 2019.

MDOT SHA’s contractor, Francis O. Day Co., Inc. of Rockville, will grind (remove the top layer of asphalt), patch, pave and restripe roughly seven miles of I-70 westbound in the project area. Motorists can expect double lane nighttime closures and occasional single lane daytime closures from 9 a.m. through 2:30 p.m. Crews will use arrow boards, cones and barrels to guide motorists through the work zone. Each year, an average of nearly 70,000 motorists travel this section of the roadway.

As of June 30, which was the end of the State’s 2018 fiscal year, MDOT SHA has resurfaced or treated half of all state highway lane miles since 2015. This milestone marks the improvement of nearly 8,500 lane miles, calculated by miles of highway multiplied by the number of lanes, improving safety and enhancing the customer experience for millions of drivers across the state.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
