(April 27, 2018) – Next week, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is beginning a project to reconstruct and improve safety on MD 845A (Main Street) between both intersectio​ns of MD 34 (Shepherdstown Pike). The $4.8 million project will be complete fall 2019. 

The project largely will enhance and improve pedestrian access in the Town of Keedysville, Washington County. Crews will construct ADA-compliant sidewalk and sidewalk ramps and install pedestrian lighting. MDOT SHA worked closely with the Town of Keedysville on the style of the street lighting to conform with the town’s character.

“We are excited to work with the town and citizens of Keedysville and appreciate their patience as we begin construction to improve access for businesses, pedestrians and motorists,” said MDOT SHA District Engineer Anthony Crawford. “We worked closely with the town and local property owners during the initial stages of the project to ensure we maintain the original charm and history of this area.”

Other work on the project includes repairing concrete on the Main Street Bridge over Little Antietam Creek, improving drainage, and paving and restriping Main Street. MDOT SHA will install “Share the Road” signs on Main Street for safe bicycle access.

Motorists can expect single lane closures between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.  MDOT SHA’s contractor, Congressional Contracting, Inc. of Rockville, will use flaggers, barrels and arrow boards to guide motorists safely through the work zone. This section of Main Street is used by nearly 600 motorists each day.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
