Motorists Should Expect Single Lane Closures along I-70 Near Mt. Tabor Road

(June 5, 2008) – Beginning tomorrow night, Friday, June 6, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will improve safety by reducing a sharp curve along eastbound I-70 (Eisenhower Memorial Highway) near Mt. Tabor Road in Frederick County. As part of the improvement, SHA will enhance the bank elevation and also resurface approximately one-half mile of the curve along eastbound I-70.

SHA will complete the $1.2 million project over two weekends, weather permitting. Motorists should expect single-lane closures along I-70 between 7 p.m. on Friday and Noon on Sunday. More than 69,000 vehicles travel along this section of I-70 each day. Motorists should expect delays during construction and consider using US 40 (Baltimore National Pike) as an alternate route.

Citizens who have questions about traffic operations along I-70, or other State numbered routes in Frederick County, may call SHA’s District 7 Office at 301-624-8100 or toll free at 1-800-635-5119.

During construction, motorists are advised to reduce speed and stay alert. Variable message signs, barrels, and arrow boards will be placed in advance of the work zone to alert motorists of the construction. SHA awarded the contract to F. O. Day Inc. of Rockville. Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pick ups.
