MDOT CREWS COMPLETE 69 TARGETED BRIDGE SAFETY INSPECTIONS

HANOVER, MD (February 14, 2015) – Following a directive from Acting Maryland Transportation Secretary Pete K. Rahn Thursday morning, the State Highway Administration has completed inspections of 27 bridges of similar age and condition to the I-495/I-95 (Capital Beltway) Bridge over Suitland Road from which loose concrete fell earlier this week.  SHA completed repairs to this bridge on Friday afternoon.  In an abundance of caution, SHA engineers and district maintenance personnel identified 42 additional bridges for a total of 69 bridges to be re-inspected outside of their normal inspection schedule (every two years).  With all 69 bridges inspected, crews today have begun removing and patching concrete and/or adding more wood planks to 17 of these bridges. 
 
“With these inspections complete, we have identified bridges that will be addressed over the next two weeks beginning today,” said Acting Transportation Secretary Rahn.  “With these actions, we want to assure the traveling public that we are committed to making sure this never happens again.”
 
While these special inspections have sped up concrete patching and installation of additional planks, the public should be aware that all 17 bridges had been under review by SHA for patching, rehabilitation or replacement.
 
SHA deployed teams today to remove loose concrete from bridges at five locations:
I-270 over MD 85 (Frederick)*
I-495 over MD 4, both bridges (Prince George’s)
I-495 over MD 414, both bridges (Prince George’s)
I-495 over Suitland Parkway, both bridges (Prince George’s)*
US 301 over MD 290 (Queen Anne’s) *

SHA will close lanes and may use flagging operations underneath the bridges on the roads noted. Crews will continue work until 3 p.m. throughout the weekend, weather permitting. Three contractors will perform the work: Concrete General, PDI Sheetz and Brawner.
