Motorists Should Expect Single Lane Closures Along Two Sections of MD 66

(October 22, 2008) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin two resurfacing projects along MD 66 (Mapleville Road) in Washington County with a combined cost of $480,000. SHA will complete both projects by the end of November, weather permitting.

SHA will resurface approximately one mile along MD 66 beginning Monday, October 27, between US 40 (National Pike) and Benevola Church Road. Additionally, SHA will resurface approximately one mile along MD 66 near Smithsburg between MD 64 (Jefferson Boulevard) and Smithsburg town limits beginning Monday, November 10.

Motorists should expect single-lane closures along both sections of MD 66, daily between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Variable message signs, barrels, and arrow boards will guide motorists through the work zone. More than 7,000 vehicles travel along these sections of MD 66 daily.

SHA awarded both contracts to Craig Paving of Hagerstown. Citizens who have questions about traffic operations along MD 66, or other State numbered routes in Washington County, may call SHA’s District 6 Office at 301-729-8400 or toll free at 1-800-760-7138.

During the next several months there could be more than 350 work zones. Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pick ups.
