(December 7, 2012) – The State Highway Administration (SHA) will initiate a new traffic pattern at the MD 404 (Shore Highway) and Legion Road intersection near the new Walmart store in Denton on December 12.  Developers of the Walmart were required by SHA to upgrade the existing traffic signal, add new turn lanes and improve pedestrian safety to accommodate local and store traffic.

The new signal pattern will allow traffic on Legion Road and the exit from the shopping center at the intersection and MD 404 to proceed simultaneously.  Previously, drivers on Legion Road and those exiting the shopping center at the signal with MD 404 would take turns, with one side going through or turning left at the intersection, then the other side doing the same.

Beginning next Wednesday, left turning traffic on the side streets will turn simultaneously following by the simultaneous movement of the through traffic.  This operation allows more vehicles to pass safely through the intersection without causing additional delay.  Motorists are urged to use caution and stay alert for the new traffic pattern.

“SHA is pleased that the intersection improvements are complete before the holidays to keep travelers and shoppers safe,” said SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters.  “Drivers should allow extra time and use caution as they adjust to the new traffic pattern.”

Additionally, as part of the intersection upgrade, new pedestrian crossings were added this week across both Legion Road and MD 404.  Pedestrians are now able to cross the intersection with countdown pedestrian signals as well as audible signals to assist visually impaired people.

Motorists can expect some minor delays on December 12th as the new traffic pattern is put into place.  The Maryland State Police will control traffic while the new signal pattern is being activated by SHA.

Portable dynamic message signs are in place at the intersection alerting drivers of the upcoming traffic pattern change and will remain in place an additional week after the new pattern is activated.  The $412,000 cost of installing the new signal and other roadway improvements was paid for by the developer.
