(October 15, 2010) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is replacing the new MD 328 (Matthewstown Road/ New Bridge Road) bridge over Tuckahoe Creek at the Caroline County/Talbot County line.

The new 930-foot long structure will relocate to just south of the current bridge and feature four-foot wide shoulders to accommodate pedestrian and bicycle traffic.  This project includes removal of the existing bridge, drain and embankment construction, paving approaches to the new bridge and landscaping.  Two-way traffic will be maintained on the existing bridge until the new bridge is complete.

Originally constructed in 1947, the MD 328 bridge carries 5,750 vehicles per day.  SHA is replacing the bridge due to significant deterioration of the riding surface (deck).  The bridge was dedicated as the Frederick Douglass Bridge in 2004 and the new structure will continue this designation.

The contract was awarded to the Joseph B. Fay Company of Russellton, PA.  Construction of the new bridge will cost $12.5 million and take approximately two years.

SHA encourages all motorists to drive responsibly and “Think Orange” while driving through highway work zones by driving the speed limit and remaining alert at all times. Learn more about work zone safety and the Choose Safety for Life campaign at ww.choosesafetyforlife.com.
