(October 13, 2010) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) recently completed a $1.9 million safety and resurfacing project along two-mile section of MD 214 (Central Avenue) between Cindy Lane and Brightseat Road in Prince George’s County.  The project began in July 2009 as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Safety improvements include replacing damaged or deteriorated concrete sidewalks and upgrading ramps to ADA standards.  Improvements to the roadway included grinding and resurfacing as well as upgrading pavement markings.  Traffic loop detectors were also upgraded at the Brightseat Road/Hampton Park Boulevard intersection.

Every day, nearly 54,000 vehicles use this section of MD 214.  The improvements benefit the communities of Landover and Capitol Heights by providing motorists with smoother travel.  Pedestrians now have wider sidewalks and improved access to the various local businesses in the area.  American Infrastructure, Inc of Fallston was the general contractor for this project.

SHA thanks motorists for their patience and cooperation and encourages drivers to always “think orange” when in a construction zone.  Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pick ups.  When workers are on the road, THINK ORANGE: slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected.  Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com.

Citizens who have questions about traffic operations on MD 214 or other State numbered routes in Prince George’s County may call SHA’s District 3 Office at 301-513-7300 or toll free at 1-800-749-0737.
