Reconstruction of Both Bridges Completed Ahead of Schedule

(December 17, 2024) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will reopen the MD 91 (Emory Rd) bridge over the north branch of the Patapsco River and the bridge over the Maryland Midland Railroad in Finksburg, Carroll County to traffic on Friday, December 20.

This reopening comes after crews completed reconstruction one month ahead of schedule. Starting at 8 a.m. on Friday (weather permitting), motorists will be able to travel northbound and southbound on MD 91. Both bridges closed to traffic in April for reconstruction.

The $14.6 million project started in fall 2023. Crews demolished the original bridges, built in 1967, and constructed two new structures. The new steel bridge over the railroad and the new concrete bridge over the Patapsco River both feature two 12-foot lanes and two eight-foot shoulders.

The project is expected to be fully completed in summer 2025. Most of the remaining work involves stormwater management improvements and may require occasional single-lane closures with a flagging operation. Any lane restrictions will be performed Monday through Friday form 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Emergency vehicles and school buses will be given priority through the roadway.

Concrete General, Inc., based in Gaithersburg, is the primary contractor on the project. Learn more about the project by clicking here.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
