​Motorists Should Plan for Approximately 12-Hour Closure on Tuesday, April 16; Baltimore Beltway Access and Park and Ride Will Not Be Affected 

(April 12, 2024) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will temporarily close the westbound I-70 bridge over I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) in the Woodlawn area of Baltimore County on April 16. The westbound I-70 bridge will be closed between 5:45 a.m. and 5 p.m. Interstate 70 access to and from I-695 and the Security Boulevard Park and ride lot will remain open.

For drivers wishing to travel westbound I-70 from the park and ride to points west, a detour will be established guiding them to the outer loop of I-695, then to westbound US 40 (Baltimore National Pike) to northbound US 29 (Columbia Pike) and back to westbound I-70.

Maryland has been chosen as the host state for National Work Zone Awareness Week. The temporary closure is necessary to safely accommodate an event that underscores the importance of work zone safety, as well as honoring highway workers who have lost their lives in work zone crashes including those who died in the March 2023 incident on I-695.

In addition, the State Highway Administration and industry partners from across the region will take part in a Work Zone Safety Unity Ride beginning at noon April 16 along I-695 and other routes. The ride is intended to raise awareness of work zone safety and to honor those who have been injured or killed in work zone crashes.

The ride is expected to last about an hour and will start from a Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport lot off MD 176 (Dorsey Road) near WB&A Road. The procession will travel east on MD 176 to northbound I-97, then onto the inner loop of I-695 to northbound I-83 (Baltimore-Harrisburg Expressway). The ride will travel north on I-83 to southbound MD 45 (York Road) and end at the Maryland State Fairgrounds. Up to 350 vehicles are expected to participate. The procession will travel at the posted speed. Drivers can expect brief ramp closures to accommodate the procession.
