Project Improves Safety and Ride Quality Along 2.5-Mile Section
(January 24, 2024) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is launching a $3 million project to improve safety and the driving surface on MD 5 (Branch Avenue) from Old Branch Avenue to Curtis Drive in the Suitland area of Prince George’s County. The project is scheduled to begin January 29, weather permitting.
The project includes resurfacing and safety improvements along the ramps from MD 5 to MD 414 (St. Barnabas Road). Weather permitting, the 2.5-mile project is anticipated to be complete by winter 2024/2025.
In addition to pavement milling and resurfacing, the project will include:
- patching the road surface;
- replacing and installing new traffic barriers;
- constructing sidewalk ramps and pedestrian bus pad connections to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards;
- replacing sidewalk, curb and gutter and inlets;
- cleaning existing inlets and pipes and trimming existing ditches;
- installing new road signage and pavement markings; and
- reconstructing existing asphalt driveway entrances with concrete pavement.
During construction, crews will close a single lane of MD 5 northbound and southbound during off peak periods. Additional workdays and times may be needed to expedite the work and keep the project on schedule. Contractor Francis O. Day, of Rockville, will perform the work.
