(September 25, 2023) –The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has completed a $30.7 million project improving pedestrian and bicycle safety, access for transit users and vehicular traffic flow along MD 212A (Powder Mill Road) from Pine Street to US 1 (Baltimore Avenue) in the Beltsville area of Prince George’s County.
The project covers about 1.3 miles and includes:
• Accessible Pedestrian Signals at Rhode Island Avenue and US 1 (Baltimore Avenue).
• new sidewalks and ramps compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
• extra wide sidewalks and concrete bus pads at bus stops for passengers waiting to board public transit.
• improved street lighting, landscaping, and drainage; and
• reconstruction and repaving of the roadway, including new bike lanes.
“The improvements along Powder Mill Road enhance safety and mobility within this community, and benefit all users – whether they drive, walk, bike or use transit,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Widefield. “This project is a great example of partnership and collaboration between our State Highway Administration team, local officials and residents.”

This project is part of a roadway transfer agreement between the State Highway Administration and the Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation. State Highway Administration contractor A. J. Romano Construction Inc., of Laurel, completed the project. More details on the project can be found
