New Intersection and Traffic Signal to be Fully Operational June 23

(June 20, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will open a new intersection with a new traffic signal this week at US 13 (Ocean Highway) and MD 822 (UMES Boulevard) in Princess Anne area of Somerset County. The new traffic signal will be in operation beginning Friday, June 23.

The signal is being placed in a mandatory flash mode for 72 hours beginning today, Tuesday, June 20, when the intersection opens to the public. Flash mode helps familiarize highway users with the new traffic pattern. Static signs and portable changeable message signs will be in place to alert motorists of the new traffic signal.

Construction on the $1.6 million project began in May 2022 and was part of a nearby development. State Highway Administration traffic analysis determined a traffic signal would increase the safety of motorists as well as enhance pedestrian safety at this location. Nearly 22,000 vehicles travel through this intersection daily.

The State Highway Administration understands roadwork can be an inconvenience to some motorists but is necessary to maintain a safe and reliable transportation system.

Warm weather is here, and many people are out walking, biking and riding on motorcycles. Motorists are urged to obey all the rules of the road, and remember that motorcycles can be hidden from view in vehicle blind spots. Please look twice and save a life.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
