Bridge Traffic to be Reduced to One Lane During Construction

(June 8, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin a $5.1 million bridge replacement project next week on MD 382 (Croom Road) over Charles Branch in Upper Marlboro. Originally constructed in 1936, the bridge is safe for the traveling public but is nearing the end of its useful service life. Work includes demolition and replacement of the existing 87-year-old, two-lane bridge.

Work will take place 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The project is expected to be complete by late summer 2024.

During construction, bridge traffic will be reduced to one travel lane. An alternating traffic pattern will be in effect with new, temporary traffic signals guiding motorists through the work zone between Sasscer Lane and the driveway entrance for Marlton Community Park.

Detours will be necessary for crews to set up and remove equipment. Portable dynamic message signs will notify motorists of the upcoming project, traffic pattern and detours.

Rustler Construction Inc., of Upper Marlboro, will perform the work. More information on the project is available here. Customers with questions may contact the State Highway Administration District 3 Office at 301-513-7300 or toll-free at 1-800-749-0737.

The State Highway Administration understands lane closures can be an inconvenience, but this work is critical to maintain the lifespan of bridge structures while ensuring all structures maintain a state of good repair.
