Automated Speed Enforcement Will Be in Effect; Citations Authorized After 21-Day Warning Period

(May 25, 2023) The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin two pipe rehabilitation projects next week along sections of US 13 in Wicomico County. The projects require installation of barrier walls to provide a safe work zone, followed by the rehabilitation of aging pipes. Weather permitting, both projects are expected to be complete by late summer.

Beginning Thursday, June 1, crews will begin work:

Work hours for both projects will be 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays. During these hours, motorists can expect shoulder closures and intermittent lane closures. Crews will first install barrier walls on the US 13 shoulders. Once the barrier walls are in place, crews will clean out, repair and pave the area along the length of the underground pipe. This portion of the project, which includes slope stabilization, will begin June 16.

The speed limit will be reduced from 65 mph to 55 mph in the area of the US 13 Business (Salisbury Road) project. Additionally, to help improve work zone safety, the Maryland SafeZones Automated Speed Enforcement system will be deployed in both work zones. After a 21-day warning period beginning June 19, Maryland State Police will authorize citations beginning Monday, July 10.

The State Highway Administration understands roadwork can be an inconvenience, but is necessary to maintain a safe and reliable transportation system. Drivers are asked to stay alert, stay focused, look for reduced speed limits as well as driving pattern changes and slow down in work zones.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
