​In collaboration with Prince George's County on November 17​

(November 3, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA), in collaboration with Prince George’s County, will host a virtual public meeting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, November 17, to present preliminary improvement concepts and answer project-related questions for the I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) at Medical Center Drive Interchange Project in Largo.

The project, located at I-95/I-495 Exit 16, Medical Center Drive (formerly Arena Drive), will address existing congestion and accommodate traffic associated with future growth, as well as improve pedestrian and bicycle connectivity.

The project has been identified by Prince George’s County as its top MDOT SHA priority and is crucial to the area’s vision and development as noted in the Prince George’s County Plan 2035. Funding from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) will assist in moving the project to construction.

“MDOT is committed to using IIJA funds to deliver projects that support safety, mobility and a state of good repair for our infrastructure,” said MDOT Secretary James F. Ports, Jr. “Working in partnership with Prince George’s County, we will deliver interchange improvements for the Capital Beltway at Medical Center Drive that support development for some of Prince Georges County’s top transportation priorities, Largo Town Center, Largo Medical Center and the Blue Line Corridor projects.”

The project team is developing conceptual interchange design alternatives based on 2045 projected traffic volumes and seeking public input on these concepts. An online comment form is available under Community Outreach and Newsletters on the Project Portal Page. 

“Improvements at this intersection are essential to local communities and businesses,” said MDOT SHA Administrator Tim Smith. “Stakeholder input will help us develop the most appropriate design to address future transportation and safety needs to better serve our customers.” 

Submitting questions and comments in advance of the virtual meeting is encouraged. Attendees also may send questions or comments through the Microsoft Teams Q&A feature during the virtual meeting.

The planning study for the project is following a process that complies with requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), as well as other laws and regulations required for projects receiving federal funds. The project team will present the preferred alternative to the public next spring and seek Federal Highway Administration approval in fall 2023. Construction is anticipated to begin in fall 2025.

Maryland’s Move Over Law requires motorists to make a lane change or slow down when approaching any stopped, standing, or parked vehicle displaying hazard warning lights, road flares, or other caution signals. The expanded law is in place to protect emergency responders and motorists who encounter a roadside emergency.
