​Virtual Public Meeting and In-Person Open House Scheduled for October 25-26 

(October 19, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will conduct a virtual public meeting and an in-person open house next week to seek public input on the I-695 (Baltimore Beltway)/I-70 Interchange (Triple Bridges) project. The virtual public meeting will be held 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 25, and the in-person open house will be the following evening, Wednesday, October 26, also from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., in the cafeteria of Southwest Academy, 6200 Johnnycake Road, near Woodlawn.  

The public’s feedback is critical in this phase of the project. The I-695 Interchange at I-70 (Triple Bridges) project is part of Governor Larry Hogan’s Traffic Relief Plan to improve traffic operations in the Baltimore region. This interchange was built in the 1960s and handles much more traffic than originally designed to carry, resulting in congestion and delays. 

The project’s goal is to improve vehicular mobility while maintaining all existing connections by addressing aging infrastructure, including the replacement of the bridges in the interchange. Information about the project, and the online survey is available here. 

At both meetings, MDOT SHA will gather public input on structural style and landscaping, as well as general feedback on the overall project. During the virtual meeting, MDOT SHA staff will inform the public about the Design-Build process, and collect input to help shape project parameters. A link to join the meeting is available on the Triple Bridges Project Portal here. At the open house, participants will be able to visit project stations to view various aspects of the project. Staff will be on site to address questions and collect feedback. The same information will be shared at both meetings.  

The public is also encouraged to provide comments through an online survey that can be accessed through the Triple Bridges Project Portal. Hard copies of the survey can be requested by contacting the project manager at I695-I70Interchange@mdot.maryland.gov or at 888-341-7230. The survey will be open through 11:59 p.m. Thursday, December 1. 

MDOT SHA will enter a single contract with a Design-Build Team, including a designer and a contractor, to design and construct the project based on the project parameters. Project plans are not being prepared for review during the planning phase. Instead, MDOT SHA is preparing the project parameters, which will set a standard or objective for design and construction, enabling the Design-Build Team to select methods and materials necessary to achieve that objective.
