New Lot has 154 Spaces and Accommodates Commuter Bus Circulation

(August 25, 2022) – On Monday, August 29, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will open a new 154-space Park and Ride lot on Elmer Derr Road next to US 15 near Jefferson in Frederick County. The new lot expands transportation options for commuters and residents, and enhances the linkage between Maryland’s roadway network, transit and ridesharing.

“MDOT has a mission to provide Marylanders with a transportation network that’s accessible, convenient and multi-modal – and that means improving connections so people can carpool and use transit more easily,” said MDOT Secretary James F. Ports, Jr. “The new Park and Ride along MD 15 will serve as a transportation hub for commuters and residents who travel this busy corridor every day.”

Crews began construction of the $4 million project in spring 2021. The new lot provides 50% more capacity compared to two previous lots in the area, which no longer meet commuter demand and will be closed. The new facility also provides a pedestrian waiting area, space for commuter bus circulation, ADA-compliant ramps and a stormwater management facility.

“A key component of this project is enhancing safety for all users,” said Tim Smith, MDOT SHA Administrator. “The new Park and Ride is well-lit, accommodates more vehicles, and contains a separate, safe waiting area away from traffic.”

MDOT SHA contractor C.J. Miller LLC, based in Hampstead, performed the work on the new Park and Ride. Learn more about the project by clicking here.  MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and look for reduced speed limits as well as other traffic pattern changes. Please drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.
