Awards Indicative of Top-Quality Pavement Management Program

(June 7, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) has captured two 2021 Perpetual Pavement Awards from the Asphalt Pavement Alliance (APA), a national coalition promoting the asphalt industry. The organization’s annual awards were announced June 1, and MDOT SHA received honors in both Performance and Design categories.

“We’re honored that APA chose our pavements as award recipients,” said MDOT SHA Administrator Tim Smith. “The recognition is a testament to the aggressive and proactive pavement management and system preservation that MDOT SHA employs on all of our nearly 18,000 lane miles.”

In the Performance category, the award is for road surfaces that are at least 35 years old and have never sustained a failure. They also have to have an average interval between resurfacing of no less than 13 years. MDOT SHA won for the 48-year-old, nearly 5-mile section of I-68 (National Freeway) in Allegany County between MD 36 (New George’s Creek Road) and MD 53 (Winchester Road). About 40,000 vehicles use this section of I-68 each day, including a high volume of heavy commercial vehicles.

In the Design category, MDOT SHA won the award for a 4-mile segment of MD 100 between MD 713 (Arundel Mills Boulevard) and WB&A Road in Anne Arundel County. Construction for this section of MD 100 was completed in 1996, and today it accommodates more than 75,000 vehicles daily.

Both awards were cited as examples of design excellence, quality in construction and value for the traveling public. Additional information is here.

The Asphalt Pavement Alliance is a coalition of the National Asphalt Pavement Association, the Asphalt Institute and the State Asphalt Pavement Associations. The mission of APA is to establish asphalt as the preferred choice for quality, performance and the environment.
