Pedestrian Improvements also Included in the Project

(April 25, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) has started preliminary work on a $266,000 project to upgrade the existing traffic signal system at the MD 185 (Connecticut Avenue) intersection with Saul Road in Kensington. Work is scheduled to begin next week and be complete in late fall.

MDOT SHA will reconstruct the traffic signal system to include:

  • Installation of accessible and countdown pedestrian crossing signals.
  • Addition of dedicated left turn arrows onto Saul Road from MD 185.
  • Upgrading traffic signal heads to LED systems to enhance traffic signal visibility.
  • Installing video detection traffic cameras that will optimize intersection efficiency.
  • Reinstalling continental crosswalks for increased pedestrian visibility.

Motorists can expect single-lane closures on MD 185 and Saul Road Mondays through Fridays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. An average of 33,000 vehicles per day use this intersection each day.

MDOT SHA’s contractor for the project is McLean Contracting Company of Glen Burnie.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Please drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.

Governor Larry Hogan has declared April as Work Zone Safety Month in Maryland. For more information on Work Zone Safety, visit roads.maryland.gov and click on the work zone safety banner. Also follow MDOT SHA on Twitter @MDSHA and on Facebook at facebook.com/MDOTSHA
