Safety Project Includes Intersection Widening to Create New Left-Turn Lane from Northbound MD 30 onto Mt. Gilead Road

(April 18, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin a project next week to improve safety and create a new left-turn lane at the MD 30 (Hanover Pike) “T” intersection at Mt. Gilead Road, north of Camp Fretterd in Baltimore County. The $1 million project is expected to be completed this fall.

“With the help of our partners in the local community during the project development phase, we are able to bring these improvements to enhance motorists’ safety at this intersection,” said MDOT SHA Administrator Tim Smith.

The project will improve visibility for motorists making left turns from northbound MD 30 onto Mt. Gilead Road. Work includes widening, paving and installation of roadway markings to create the new left-turn lane. Other elements include milling and resurfacing of existing pavement, replacing and upgrading driveway tie-ins and sidewalks where needed, installation of new curb and gutter and drainage pipes, upgrading metal traffic barriers and placement of new traffic signs at the intersection.

Lane closures for safe operations will be required on MD 30 weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., as well as overnight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday evenings through Friday mornings. In addition, crews may need to temporarily close Mt. Gilead Road at MD 30. When that occurs, a posted detour route will direct motorists around the closure via Emory Road.

MDOT SHA will post detours in advance on the project portal page and on portable digital message boards prior to the work zone. Sunny Acres Landscaping Inc., of Davidsonville, is performing the work. Learn more about the project by clicking HERE.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers.  Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Please drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.
