Wider Structures Provide Easier Access and Increased Safety for All Users
(January 13, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) has completed a $36.3 million project to replace two parallel bridges on I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) over Suitland Road in Prince George’s County. The 54-year-old structures were nearing the end of their useful service life and needed replacement. The project improves safety for motorists who use I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway).
The 1.85-mile project began at the Auth Road overpass and extended north past the MD 4 (Forestville Road) interchange ramps.
The new steel girder bridges have wider inside shoulders. Each new one-span bridge is raised to provide additional clearance above Suitland Road. New lighting and stormwater management facilities were also constructed. Other work for the project included paving, lane striping and utility relocations.
“By delivering major projects such as these new Capital Beltway bridges, MDOT SHA continues to focus on the preservation of our transportation system to contribute directly to the continued flow of the supply chain and to ensure a sound transportation infrastructure for the next generation,” said MDOT SHA Administrator Tim Smith. “In addition to replacing the bridges, the extra clearance for trucks on Suitland Parkway and upgraded pedestrian lighting under the bridge provide safe access for all users.”
While this project is substantially complete, some drainage and landscaping work will be completed in spring, and some off-peak lane closures may be required for work in the median.
MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on the road and look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Please drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.
Motorists can dial #77 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.
