​Overnight Operations Scheduled Monday-Thursday, November 15-18

(November 10, 2021) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will perform work next week to remove older steel girders from the US 1 (Washington Boulevard) bridge over CSX Transportation rail lines in Halethorpe. The work is part of MDOT SHA’s ongoing $29 million project to replace the US 1 bridge over CSX.    

The removal of the older girders should take four nights to complete, with a temporary closure and detour required the first night only, between 8 p.m. Monday, November 15, and 5 a.m. Tuesday, November 16. In case of inclement weather, the bridge closure and detour will take place on the next possible weeknight.

The detour for the overnight closure 8 p.m. Monday into 5 a.m. Tuesday will use the following routes:

• From US 1 Northbound – take I-195 West to I-95 North past I-695. Then take the ramp to Caton Avenue South and continue on Caton Avenue. Turn right onto US 1 Alt (Washington Boulevard).    
• From US 1 Southbound – turn right onto Selma Avenue, continue to Francis Avenue, turn right onto Selford Road. Continue to South Rolling Road, turn right onto the ramp to I-195 East. Take I-195 East back to US 1.     
• Clarke Boulevard to US 1 – take Clarke Boulevard onto Selford Road. Turn right onto Francis Avenue. Take the Francis Avenue bridge over the rail lines to Ridge Avenue. Continue on Ridge Avenue to US 1 and turn left onto US 1.
• US 1 to Clarke Boulevard – from US 1 take Tom Day Boulevard. Take second left onto Carville Avenue. Turn right onto Francis Avenue. Turn left onto Selford Avenue and proceed to Clarke Boulevard.    

Following the Monday night closure, work will continue Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 7:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. the next morning. However the bridge will remain open to traffic. There will be temporary lane closures on the bridge and flagging operations in effect so crews may use cranes and other heavy construction equipment necessary.    

Weather permitting, the work to remove the old bridge girders will be complete by 5 a.m. Friday, November 19. Lane Construction Inc. of Glen Burnie is the contractor on the bridge project which is scheduled to be complete fall 2022. Learn more about the project HERE.
