​Project Will Improve Pedestrian Access, Safety Along Talbot Street

(October 28, 2021) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is launching a project next week to reconstruct sidewalks along MD 33 (Talbot Street) from Spencer Avenue to Lee Street in historic St. Michaels, Talbot County. The two-year, $2 million project to improve pedestrian access and safety includes sidewalk repair and replacement, ramps and crosswalks built to current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.

MDOT SHA will perform much of the work between fall and spring to minimize public impacts during the busy tourist season. Motorists can expect occasional daytime lane and shoulder closures. Pedestrian detours will be established when sidewalk sections are temporarily closed for construction. Pedestrians, cyclists and motorists are urged to pay close attention to surrounding conditions when approaching and traveling through work areas.    

Throughout the planning phase, MDOT SHA worked closely with the Town of St. Michaels to ensure this project maintains the historic character of the downtown commercial corridor. Existing brick pavers and granite curbs will be reset for ADA compliance and several sections of concrete sidewalk will be replaced with brick and granite.
