Crews to Switch Traffic Pattern on I-270 Exit Ramps to Install New Pipes

(September 13, 2021) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will improve drainage on the southbound I-270 (Washington National Pike) exit ramps to northbound and southbound MD 85 (Buckeystown Pike) starting tonight.

At 9 p.m., MDOT SHA crews will shift traffic from the existing ramp lanes to the newly constructed ramps. The ramps will be closed during the traffic shift. Motorists will be detoured to MD 80 (Fingerboard Road) and northbound I-270 to access MD 85.
The traffic shift is expected to be complete by 4 a.m. on Thursday, September 16, weather permitting. The new traffic pattern will allow crews to install new pipes under the existing ramps.

This work is part of MDOT SHA’s $87.7 million I-270/MD 85 interchange project to enhance safety and increase capacity. The project also replaces two I-270 bridges and will increase capacity on MD 85 by adding a new travel lane in both directions between Spectrum Drive and Crestwood Boulevard. The project is expected to be complete in fall 2022.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers.  Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.

Stranded motorists can dial #77 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.
